The Republic of Seychelles is an archipelago of 115 islands anchored in the western part of the Indian Ocean. Seventy-three of these islands are founded upon coral while the rest, including Frégate, are granitic. The nation’s capital is Victoria, on the island of Mahé. Its people are known as the Seychellois. Frégate is a twenty minute flight east from Mahé. It lies four degrees south of the equator, and far, far away from the clatter of modern life: approximately 1,000 miles south of India, 1,000 miles east of Africa, and 1,000 miles north-east of Madagascar. A French colony in 1770, the Seychelles was annexed by the British in 1811, became an autonomous colony in 1975, and achieved full independence in 1976. The island is small, which makes it ideal for exploring on foot. It covers a mere 740 acres (1.15 square miles, or 3 square kilometres). The highest point is Mount Signal, which reaches a peak of 125 metres (410 feet). The year round temperature is 24-27° Celsius (75-86° Fahren- heit), and because the Seychelles lies outside of the cyclone belt severe weather is highly unlikely

To maintain Frégate Island’s tranquillity and beauty without impacting the delicate balance of its ecosystem, Frégate Island Private voluntarily restricts itself to just sixteen 185-square-metre (2,000-square-foot) villas. Built from traditional materials such as native mahogany and African teak in a simple post-and-lintel style, the villas are topped off with dense thatched roofs. Both the architecture and decor draw on Balinese and Thai influences. Fourteen of the villas sit on top of the cliffs with panoramic views over the Indian Ocean. Two more nestle in their own private tropical gardens, and these are particularly good choices for families vacationing with young children. Each villa was situated to make it feel like a part of the surrounding landscape, and to ensure maximum privacy and seclusion for the guests. Sliding glass walls and French doors that can be opened to the elements help to further blur the line that separates inside from outside. Despite their traditional appearance and supremely laid-back ambiance, the villas come well-equipped with DVD machines and CD players. And, of course, if the fresh sea breezes aren’t quite cool enough for you, there’s always air conditioning.

In keeping with the resort’s commitment to providing its guests with the finest quality while at the same time coexisting successfully with the island’s fragile wildlife, our chefs create gourmet meals using produce grown hydroponically in our gardens. This ensures a steady supply of tomatoes, eggplant, squash, cucumbers, peppers and other vegetables. A small plantation yields home-grown pineapples, oranges, breadfruit, bananas, and a wide variety of herbs and spices. Naturally, there´s fresh fish in abundance. There are two main restaurants, one in Frégate House and one in Plantation House, or you can enjoy your meals in the privacy of your villa. The open-air Pirates Bar serves light lunches and snacks.
